I’ve Filled My Car with The Wrong Fuel! What Should I Do?
The most important things are that you don’t turn on the engine, and you don’t panic. Give us a call on 0800 193 1103 or 07538 889 922 as soon as you can.
We’re available 24 hours a day and will dispatch a van of fully trained operators to your location. They’ll help move your vehicle to a safe location if you haven’t been able to do so already, and then get to work removing the diesel or petrol from your tank.
How Long Does a Fuel Drain Take?
This depends vehicle type, tank design, fuel system and if you’ve driven the vehicle whilst it’s been wrongly fuelled.
Most fuel drains are completed within an hour of our arrival to your location.
What Damage Does Incorrect Fuel Do?
Petrol burns hotter than diesel won’t lubricate a diesel engine. This means your engine will start to grind and cause damage to its own moving parts. Sufficient quantities of petrol can damage anything from the fuel pumps to the delivery system right to the engine itself.
Diesel won’t burn properly in a petrol engine, so it’ll bog it down and cause problems with the petrol injection modules, exhaust system and more.
We can’t stress it enough – don’t turn on your engine!
Will My Insurance Cover the Cost?
Unfortunately, most insurance policies will not cover accidental misfuelling. Unless you have a specific cause in your contract, it’s unlikely you are covered.
I’ve Only Put a Small Amount of the Wrong Fuel in my Vehicle. Will I be Okay?
There is no one answer for this. It really depends on the engine and fuel system.
In our experience, if you only put a few litres in the tank it won’t cause a notable problem. The best thing for you to do would be to dilute the incorrect fuel by filling the rest of the tank with the right fuel.
