Is Putting Petrol in my Diesel Car Dangerous?
With the rising popularity of diesel engines across the UK, more and more drivers are making the switch to diesel.
There are plenty of good reasons for this; improved fuel efficiency, reduced CO2 emissions, the resultant lower annual road tax bill – but whatever the reason, the switch becomes more and more attractive and many drivers, as they replace their old car, look to diesel engines.
The only real fly in the ointment is that old habits die hard, and if you stop at a filling station on autopilot, it’s easy to grab the wrong hose from the pump and be some way in to filling your car with unleaded petrol, only to remember that that’s not the right move anymore!
Misfuelling, as this is called, happens every day, and if you don’t catch it in time you can run into some serious trouble.
What’s the Problem?
Diesel pumps run at very high pressure for the engine to work, and introducing petrol into the engine itself will reduce pump lubrication, meaning that the components will wear on each other, causing lasting damage that can prevent your engine from working.
Petrol can also damage pump and fuel system seals, as they’re not designed with its chemical composition in mind.
The longer you let your diesel engine run with petrol in circulation, the more lasting damage you’ll create, with a worst-case scenario calling for you to replace multiple expensive engine parts at the same time just to drive your car.
So What’s the Solution?
Simply put, it’s important to make sure your engine is contaminated as little as possible. When you realise your situation, stop what you’re doing. Don’t start your engine; don’t even put your key in the ignition – in many cars this triggers the tank’s pump to prime, which introduces the petrol into the engine proper.
