Sometimes we drive
car in a distracted state of mind. That’s definitely not good as it
might cause accidents but such things happen. Now just imagine, you
pull up the car at a petrol station on your way to destination and being
absent minded, you accidentally overlook the unleaded fuel nozzle, reaching out for the diesel fuel nozzle. What will happen
now? The first point to
understand is filling up wrong fuel in tank is a slim possibility in
case of most vehicles. If your car has been manufactured within the
last 25 years or so, it will have a plate under the gas cap to
prevent anything only exception is unleaded gasoline nozzle
from fitting into the tank.

When unleaded
gasoline first hit the market, the plate was of great use to prevent
the drivers from fitting the leaded fuel nozzle in. The leaded
and unleaded nozzles were different in sizes. The bigger difference
is the leaded nozzles are smaller than the diesel nozzle. So there is
no chance that it would fit in the gas tank of most of the vehicles.
However, most of the trucks and motorcycles don’t have such plate,
that’s why the car owners often make such mistakes. And if you own
an older car, the plate won’t be there.

Gasoline and diesel
feel and smell different. For example, diesel is oily. Gasoline
evaporates unlike diesel fuel. In addition, diesel fuel is heavier.
If you compare a gallon of gasoline and the same amount of diesel,
the later is almost a pound heavier than its counterpart. If you have
got your car tank filled with diesel, the fuel injectors in the
engine would feed the engine’s cylinders with diesel fuel. This
will lead to spark plug fire but no causality would happen. This is
because; diesel fuel never evaporates very well. So the spark plugs
won’t ignite anything and the engine would never spring into
action.The only solution is
to drain out the diesel and get it refilled with gasoline. It might
take some time to drain diesel out of the engine, fuel pumps and
injectors. Once the tank is refilled, the engine would be fine and
start. And don’t worry; there won’t be any damage to your engine
due to wrong fuel fill-up.
